In Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Nantou Ancient Town has a 1,700-year history. It’s a key historical relic and one of Shenzhen’s birthplaces.
Its story began in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, when it was the administrative center of “Dongguan Jun”. During the Ming Dynasty, city walls were built to fend off pirates, turning it into a military fortress (“Dongguan Shouyu Qianhusuo”)—this is how the town took shape. Notably, Hong Kong was once under its jurisdiction, linking it closely to Hong Kong’s history.
Today, while restoring ancient buildings, it blends modern art, design, cafes and shops. Now a “living history museum”, it’s very popular.

I arrived at Nantou Ancient Town in the evening.
I entered through South Gate 1 of Nantou Ancient Town.

Go straight ahead, and you’ll soon see the South City Gate.

Pass through the South City Gate, and you’ll see various stylish shops lined up on both sides.

I’m going to check out South Gate Park.

The artificial moon lights have lit up.

There’s a dog café here, and it seems like you can also take dogs for a walk here.

I’m going to step into an experience store called “MUMO (木墨)”, which focuses on solid wood furniture.

The sky is getting darker gradually.
As night falls, the area around Nantou Ancient Town takes on a charming atmosphere.

I’m going to step into the building to see the museum’s exhibition.

After exiting the museum, it was already night. I’m going to wander around the Nantou Ancient Town area a bit more.

It’s about time to head back.

Nantou Ancient Town is a cultural spot that combines the history of an ancient military fortress with the vitality of modern art.
A visit to Nantou Ancient Town should allow you to experience the profound history of Shenzhen before it became a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
