A few days ago, I visited “Dapeng Ancient Fortress” located in Dapeng New District (Dapeng Peninsula) of Shenzhen, and I’d like to share what it’s like.

Dapeng Ancient Fortress traces its origins to “Dapeng Garrison Thousand-Household Fortress” — a military stronghold built in the 27th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1394 AD) to defend against pirate raids. Back then, in what is now Shenzhen (then known as Xin’an County), it served as a crucial military hub and played a vital strategic role.
Additionally, Shenzhen’s nickname, “Pengcheng” (literally “Roc City”), derives from this ancient fortress. It is said that the name carries a wish for the region’s prosperity: just like the roc — a mythical giant bird — spreading its wings and soaring grandly, the area was hoped to thrive and flourish.
